How it works

  1. Tap Share under the video

Open the video and tap Share, under the title on mobile or below the player on desktop. Copy link works just as well.

  2. Send the link to Hugo

Pick Hugo from the share sheet, or paste the link into the app. Full youtube.com links, youtu.be short links and Shorts URLs all work.

  3. Cook it

Hugo hands back the recipe as a page you can actually follow, with a link back to the video for the parts you want to watch.

Why the description box is not enough

A 20 minute video is not a recipe.

Some channels write the full recipe in the description. Plenty write nothing, or link out to a blog with six paragraphs about their grandmother. Either way the real detail is in the video: the temperature they mention in passing, the resting time they say once. Hugo watches the whole upload and reads the description, then writes down what you actually need.

  • Watches the full video, however long it runs
  • Reads the description when the creator puts the recipe there
  • Catches details said once and never written, like resting times
  • Works with Shorts as well as long-form uploads
  • Keeps a link back to the video so you can rewatch a technique

YouTube questions

What people ask.

Does this work with long videos or only Shorts?

Both. Shorts work, and so do full-length uploads. Long videos are really the point: a 20 minute video is exactly the kind you do not want to scrub through with your hands covered in flour.

What if the recipe is already in the description?

Hugo reads it and uses it. It also watches the video, because descriptions are often missing a step or a temperature that the creator only says out loud. You get both sources combined into one recipe.

Can I paste a youtu.be link?

Yes. Short youtu.be links, full youtube.com links, m.youtube.com links and Shorts URLs all work. Extra tracking bits on the end of the URL are ignored.

The channel is not in my language. Does that matter?

No. Hugo can read a recipe from a video in one language and write it out in yours, so a Japanese or Italian cooking channel is as usable as one in English.

Does the creator still get credit?

Yes. Every saved recipe keeps a link back to the original video, so the channel is one tap away and you can go back to watch the technique whenever you want.

Can I save a private or unlisted video?

No. Hugo can only read videos that are publicly viewable. Private videos, and anything behind a members-only paywall, are not something Hugo can see.
