Getting started

What is Hugo?

Hugo is a recipe app for iPhone and Android. You can save and organize recipes, import recipes from links you provide, adapt recipes and create your own versions, use collections, add private notes, and use optional AI features for recipe import and cooking Q&A.

How do I create an account?

Open Hugo on your iPhone or Android device and choose to sign in. Hugo supports Sign in with Apple and Google sign-in. Once signed in, your recipes sync to your account.

Subscriptions and billing

What does the Premium subscription include?

Premium removes free-tier limits — unlimited recipe imports and unlimited AI chat with Hugo. Exact features and any free-trial terms are shown on the in-app paywall before you subscribe.

How am I billed?

On iPhone, subscriptions are sold and processed by Apple through your Apple ID. On Android, they are sold and processed by Google Play through your Google account. Hugo does not receive or store your payment card details. Prices vary by country and are set by the App Store and Google Play for your region, so they can differ between countries. Subscriptions auto-renew at the end of each billing period unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the period ends.

How do I cancel my subscription?

On iPhone: open Settings → tap your name at the top → Subscriptions → tap Hugo Cancel Subscription.

On Android: open the Google Play Store → tap your profile icon → Payments & subscriptions Subscriptions → tap Hugo Cancel subscription.

Cancellation stops future renewals; you keep access until the end of the current period. Deleting the Hugo app does not, by itself, cancel your subscription.

How do I restore a subscription on a new device?

Sign in to Hugo with the same account you used originally, and on the same store account that bought the subscription — your Apple ID on iPhone, or your Google account on Android. If your subscription doesn't appear, look for a Restore Purchasesoption in the app's settings or paywall screen.

How do I request a refund?

iPhone purchases. Refunds are handled by Apple. Visit reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in with your Apple ID, find the Hugo subscription, and choose Request a refund.

Android purchases. Refunds are handled by Google. Visit your Google Play order history, find the Hugo purchase, and choose Request a refund (or report a problem).

Brazilian consumers — right of regret. If you are a consumer in Brazil, you may cancel within 7 days of purchase and receive a full refund under Art. 49 of the Consumer Defense Code. Email us at chefhugoapp@gmail.com within those 7 days and we will work with Apple or Google Play to process the refund. See our Terms of Use for the full policy.

AI features

How does the AI cooking assistant work?

When you use AI features — importing a recipe from a link or chatting with Hugo — your input and any recipe context are sent to one or more third-party AI inference providers (currently OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google). Their standard API terms apply, under which submitted content is not used to train their models. See our Privacy Policy for details.

Can I trust what the AI says?

AI output can be incomplete or incorrect — including ingredients, quantities, cooking times, temperatures, substitutions, and allergen information. Treat suggestions as a starting point and always verify. Hugo does not provide medical, nutritional, or food-safety advice; if you have allergies, dietary restrictions, or any medical concern, consult a qualified professional.

Can I use Hugo without AI?

Yes. AI features are optional. You can save, organize, and edit recipes manually without them.

Importing recipes

What kinds of links can I import?

Hugo can import recipes from many recipe blogs, cooking sites, and social posts that include recipe content. Paste a link or share it to Hugo from another app.

Why did an import fail or come out wrong?

Some sites block automated requests, hide content behind login walls, or present recipes in formats that are hard to parse. If an import fails, try sharing a different version of the page (for example, the printable view), or create the recipe manually. You can always edit imported recipes.

Account and data

How do I delete my account?

You can permanently delete your account directly in the app, from Settings → Delete account. This permanently removes your sign-in (the account cannot be recovered), cancels any active subscription, and anonymizes your profile data. You can also email chefhugoapp@gmail.com with the subject "Account deletion request."

What is removed. Your sign-in identity is permanently deleted. Your profile, and the recipes, notes, and collections associated with your account, are anonymized so they can no longer be linked back to you.

What is retained. Backups may retain data for a short period for security, and we keep limited records where required by law. Emailed deletion requests are processed within 30 days; in-app deletion takes effect right away.

See our Privacy Policy for full retention details.

How do I export my data?

Email chefhugoapp@gmail.com with the subject "Data export request" and we'll send you a copy of the personal data we hold about you.

How do I control ad tracking?

Hugo's advertising measurement is optional and under your control. On iPhone, we ask through Apple's App Tracking Transparency prompt — it's off unless you choose Allow, and you can change it anytime in Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking.

On Android, it follows your device's Google advertising settings — you can reset or delete your advertising ID and opt out of ad personalization from your device settings at any time.

See our Privacy Policy for what we collect and why.

Troubleshooting

The app crashes or won't open

Make sure your device is running a recent version of iOS or Android and that Hugo is updated to the latest version from the App Store or Google Play. If the problem persists, fully quit the app (from the app switcher) and reopen it, or reinstall Hugo. Reinstalling does not affect recipes stored in your account; sign back in to sync.

I can't sign in

Check that you're using the same sign-in method (Apple or Google) you used originally. If you still can't get in, email chefhugoapp@gmail.com with the email address on your account.

Restore Purchases isn't bringing back my Premium

Make sure you're signed in to the same store account that originally bought the subscription — your Apple ID on iPhone, or your Google account on Android — then try Restore Purchasesagain from the app. If it still doesn't work, email chefhugoapp@gmail.com with the store account email used for the purchase and we'll help.
